Yesterday I asked which would you rather be?

Goblin A vs. Goblin B
Both make item X

Goblin A sells 1000 per week @ 1G profit per.
Goblin B sells 100 per week @ 2G profit per.

Before I answer I would like introduce the notion of “Gold per Action”.

Gold per Hour vs. Gold per Action
Gold per Hour measures the amount of Gold one can profit in an Hour of Play time.
Gold per Action is a measure of the amount of Gold one can profit per key stroke.

Since I value every keystroke more than most, I prefer to measure success by looking at Gold per Action.

Back to the example, we have two Goblins selling the same item. I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume that both Goblins take generally the same steps/actions to sell the items.
In this case Goblin A employed 10 times the actions of Goblin B to sell the goods but at the end of the week Goblin A made only 5 times more gold.

The winner depends on what you value more:

Overall Gold: Goblin A by 800 Gold!
Gold per Action: Goblin B made twice the gold per action

To start things off I would like to look at an extreme hypothetical example.
We have two Goblins selling the same item.

Goblin A is all about volume. Goblin A always has the lowest price on the auction house and his sales show it. Goblin A sells 1000 of item X per week at an average profit per item of 1 Gold.
Goblin B ignores under-cutters and posts all auctions at what they believe to be fair market value. Goblin B sells 100 of item x per week at an average profit per item of 2 Gold.

At the end of the week Goblin A made 1,000 gold, Goblin B only made 200.

Who would you rather be?

Monday Rant! March 15th 2010

There’s nothing worse than the drive to work Monday morning.
With that in mind I’ve decided to dedicate my Monday posts to things I hate.

Let’s start things off proper… I hate 12 hour actions!

I can’t remember a single time I’ve ever posted a 12 hour action that I didn’t feel rage. For some people a 12 hour action represents a business plan. For me it represents a terrible failure.

Any time I press that 12 hour auction button I’m admitting two things. The deposit is high enough to seriously affect my margins, and if the auction does not sell in the first hour it will not sell period. The rage comes from the feeling that I just backed myself into a corner.

Once I have identified the need for a 12 hour auction I will purge myself of any and all goods at any price. I would rather loose 50% of my investment than micro-manage an auction.

Philosophy of the Crippled Hands

I have major issues with the nerves from my neck down to my hands.
Think carpal tunnel syndrome but I have many more trigger points to worry about. To make a long story short I need to keep a close eye on the amount of time I spend on a computer.

I have a great love for gaming but I also have a wife and two children to support. If I overdo it in WoW I face a painful reminder at work the next day/week/month…

I have had no choice but to alter my gaming experience to accommodate my situation.

My current goal is to hit 50,000 gold as fast as possible with the least amount of hand pain.
I will write about my successes and failures as often as possible.

I’ve decided to take the plunge and start my own blog.

Generally speaking I will write about making gold in World of Warcraft. Currently I have approximately 25,000 Gold liquid and another 2-5,000 in goods and auctions.
My goal is to bring a new perspective on the community but I’ll get into that in my next post.
